The progression at a glance
Copper and tin are alloyed into bronze. Forge a bronze head and assemble the pickaxe to unlock iron mining. Do not travel for iron with only a stone pickaxe.
Use the region name as a clue
| Region / environment | Look for |
|---|---|
| Woods | Forest resources and Copper Ore |
| Crags | Limestone and Tin Ore |
| Heights | Copper Ore and Iron Ore |
| Fen | Bog Iron |
| Ashlands | Obsidian and Emberstone |
| Meteorite craters | Star Iron; bring a Steel Pickaxe |

Two routes to iron
Iron Ore and Bog Iron use the same basic ratio: 2 raw material + 1 Charcoal → 1 Iron Ingot. Both need a bronze pickaxe or better to gather. Choose the route that fits the region you can reach.
At the next stage, one Steel Ingot takes 3 Iron Ingots + 2 Charcoal. If you are starting from Iron Ore, that means six ore and three charcoal just for the iron, then two more charcoal for the steel step.
Plan an iron batch ↗Obsidian, Blacksteel and Star Iron
In Ashlands, look for large black glass deposits for Obsidian. Blacksteel combines Steel Ingots, Obsidian and an Ember Core, with Emberstone as fuel in a Blast Smelter.
Star Iron is gathered from meteorite craters with a Steel Pickaxe. Use a Blast Smelter to turn it into Star Iron Ingots. It no longer serves as an ingredient for ordinary steel.
Make the return trip count
Take food, set a rest point and leave nonessential valuables behind. Carry weight can prevent sprinting. Upgrade your bag or make shorter trips; dropped Pack goods have a recovery timer and are not private.
