Start from the ground up
Open B, choose the piece and inspect the placement preview. Green means the position is valid; red indicates a blocked placement. Rotate eligible pieces with R and use Esc to leave placement mode.
A small sheltered workshop is a good first project. Make room for a Workbench, storage and the stations you actually need before building extra floors.
Keep your supplies accessible to you
A basic Storage Chest takes 4 Planks + 1 Rope, but other players can open it when they can reach it. A Metal Chest takes 4 Planks + 2 Iron Ingots and restricts opening to its owner.
Doors let owners and townmates with the right building permission through. Use the building layout to control access; a chest being inside a house is not the same as a chest being unreachable.
Maintenance and upgrades
Wilderness structures decay over time, including when you are offline. Use the Maintain action in Build with a wooden hammer and the required materials. Inspect the live structure condition instead of assuming one repair lasts a fixed number of days.
Stone upgrades strengthen supports and permit taller construction. Build with supports in mind before adding upper floors.
Change a building without losing it
Work downward when dismantling. Removing a support can collapse the pieces resting on it. Move stored supplies first, inspect what depends on the piece, and take upper sections down before their base.
If the house will become a long-term base, read the town and upkeep guide. Claimed land has its own treasury and plot requirements.
